Synopsis
In 1930s Tennessee during the Great Depression, an idealistic Tennessee Valley Authority administrator arrives to purchase and flood Garth Island to build a flood-control dam, clashing with an unyielding, 80-year-old matriarch who refuses to leave her ancestral land where generations of her family and freed slaves were buried, falling into a passionate romance with the matriarch's widowed granddaughter. Elia Kazan's poetic, CinemaScope masterpiece starring Montgomery Clift, Lee Remick, and Jo Van Fleet.
