Synopsis
In 1890s Anatolia during Ottoman persecutions of Greeks and Armenians, an impoverished, resilient twenty-year-old Greek youth is entrusted with his family's lifetime savings to take to Constantinople, resolved despite robberies, betrayals, and starvation to secure passage on an immigrant steamship to America, washing steamship decks and carrying luggage to reach New York harbor: 'My name is Stavros. I am twenty. I want to go to America.' Elia Kazan's four-time Oscar-nominated autobiographical family monument starring Stathis Giallelis with Haskell Wexler's camera and Manos Hatzidakis' score.
