The Dead
Synopsis
On the snowy Feast of the Epiphany in 1904 Dublin, guests gather for the annual holiday dinner party hosted by the spinster Morkan sisters, filled with Irish ballads, poetry recitations, and warm conviviality, until the singing of 'The Lass of Aughrim' triggers a long-buried sorrow in Gabriel Conroy's wife Gretta, who confesses the memory of Michael Furey, a delicate youth who died for love of her in Galway: 'The snow was falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.' John Huston's deeply moving, Oscar-nominated final film masterpiece adapted from James Joyce.
