Synopsis
During World War II, a wounded German paratrooper is sent to convalesce on the sun-baked, quiet Greek island of Kos alongside two comrades and his Greek wife, assigned to guard an ancient Venetian ammunition fortress in the valley of windmills, where the blinding Aegean sunlight, monotonous heat, and thousands of turning white windmill sails drive the soldier into paranoid madness, barricading the fortress and firing fireworks at the sun: 'In his defeat he was enormous.' Werner Herzog's astonishing, Berlin Silver Bear-winning debut feature.
