Synopsis

A pure, saintly Catholic priest in turn-of-the-century Porfirian Mexico lives in absolute apostolic poverty among prostitutes and thieves, forced to flee as a vagabond across the countryside after sheltering a murderous prostitute, finding that every attempt to perform genuine Christian charity only brings disaster, plague, and hatred upon those he seeks to save. Luis Buñuel's Cannes International Prize-winning spiritual masterpiece based on Benito Pérez Galdós starring Francisco Rabal.
