Synopsis

During the Allied invasion of Italy in 1944, a fierce widowed Roman shopkeeper flees bombing raids with her devout 12-year-old daughter to her rural hometown in Ciociaria, suffering harrowing wartime violence inside a ruined church while trekking back toward Rome.
