Synopsis

A broken, trembling Hollywood extra—formerly a mighty Grand Duke and commander-in-chief of the Russian Imperial Army—is cast as an imperial general by an exiled Russian revolutionist director who was once his prisoner, leading to a tragic, delirium-fueled performance on the studio soundstage. Josef von Sternberg's masterpiece that earned Emil Jannings the first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor.
