Synopsis

A burly steamship stoker on shore leave for twenty-four hours in New York Harbor rescues a despondent, suicidal streetwalker who leaped into the icy waters, marrying her in an all-night dive bar before morning awakens genuine devotion. Josef von Sternberg's poetic, atmosphere-drenched silent masterpiece starring George Bancroft and Betty Compson.
