Synopsis

In the frozen, snow-swept forests of occupied Belarus in 1942, two Soviet partisans are captured by Nazi forces and their local collaborators, with one breaking under torture to become an executioner while the other embraces martyrdom in a transcendent, Christ-like passion. Larisa Shepitko's Berlin Golden Bear-winning monochrome spiritual masterpiece.
