Synopsis
In the mythical, hallucinatory Republic of Eldorado—a surreal allegory for Brazil and Latin America—a disillusioned poet and journalist is caught in a violent ideological power struggle between a messianic right-wing populist governor backed by an exploitative media empire and a timid, compromised reformist politician, ultimately seizing a machine gun to meet police bullets on a desolate highway. Glauber Rocha's Cannes FIPRESCI Prize and Locarno-winning Cinema Novo operatic masterpiece starring Jardel Filho and Glauce Rocha.
