Synopsis

In a post-war Tokyo slum built around a festering, bubonic sumphole, an alcoholic, combative neighborhood doctor treats a swaggering young yakuza gangster with a bullet in his leg, discovering he is dying of tuberculosis and fighting desperately to save the stubborn thug's soul from rival gang warfare. Akira Kurosawa's breakthrough post-war masterpiece that inaugurated his legendary sixteen-film collaboration with Toshiro Mifune.
