Synopsis
An ailing, avant-garde modernist composer convalescing at the Grand Hôtel des Bains on the Venice Lido becomes consumed by an obsessive, platonic aesthetic adoration for an ethereal Polish youth named Tadzio, ignoring a deadly Asiatic cholera epidemic sweeping through the canals as his dyed hair and makeup melt in the humid Sirocco heat. Luchino Visconti's Cannes 25th Anniversary Prize-winning adaptation of Thomas Mann starring Dirk Bogarde with Gustav Mahler's Adagietto from the Fifth Symphony.
