Timbuktu
Synopsis
In northern Mali, the ancient UNESCO World Heritage city of Timbuktu falls under the totalitarian occupation of foreign Islamist jihadist militants armed with Kalashnikovs and megaphones who ban music, football, laughter, and colorful fabrics, centered on a gentle Tuareg cattle herder living peacefully in the desert sand dunes outside the city whose accidental killing of a local fisherman brings him before an unforgiving sharia tribunal. Abderrahmane Sissako and Sofian El Fani's Cannes François Chalais Prize and seven-César-winning and Oscar-nominated poetic monument featuring an indelible scene of youth playing soccer with an invisible ball.
