Synopsis

In medieval Sweden, an innocent Christian maiden riding on horseback through the forest to deliver candles to church is brutally raped and murdered by three pagan goat herders, who unknowingly seek lodging at her wealthy father's farm, triggering a ritualistic slaughter of vengeance followed by a miraculous spring of water bursting from the earth. Ingmar Bergman's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar-winning masterpiece starring Max von Sydow that inspired Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left.
