The Match Factory Girl

Synopsis

In Helsinki, an impassive, quiet young woman works a monotonous factory job watching automated machines stamp matchboxes, surrendering her meager pay to her cold, demanding mother and stepfather who treat her like a servant, until a one-night stand leaves her pregnant and coldly abandoned, prompting her to buy rat poison and systematically serve it to everyone who wronged her. Aki Kaurismäki's minimalist deadpan masterpiece starring Kati Outinen—the crowning chapter of the Proletariat Trilogy.
