Synopsis
Written by Ingmar Bergman about the fraught, stormy courtship and early marriage of his own parents in 1909, an impoverished, idealistic theology student marries an aristocratic, willful young woman against her family's vehement objections, taking up a rugged rural parish in northern Sweden where harsh winters, social friction, and their fierce pride tear at their marriage. Bille August's Cannes Palme d'Or and Cannes Best Actress-winning epic starring Pernilla August and Samuel Fröler.
