Synopsis

A reformed outlaw travelling on a train to hire a schoolteacher for his peaceful Texas frontier community is stranded after a train robbery, seeking shelter at an abandoned ghost ranch only to find his former gang led by his demented, surrogate-father uncle who raised him in blood and savagery, forcing the nephew into psychological humiliation and brutal gunfights to save a dance-hall singer. Anthony Mann and Reginald Rose's bleak, Shakespearean psychological Western masterpiece starring Gary Cooper, Lee J. Cobb, and Julie London.
