Synopsis
In 16th-century Moscow, the 17-year-old Grand Duke Ivan IV is crowned the first Tsar of All Rus, conquering the Tatar fortress of Kazan and defying the treacherous Boyar feudal nobility to unite Russia, descending into brooding isolation after his beloved Tsarina is poisoned. Sergei Eisenstein's monumental baroque masterpiece of stylized acting, architecture, and shadow, commissioned by Joseph Stalin during World War II.
