Synopsis

A tyrannical, drunken Victorian Salford bootmaker refuses to provide dowries for his three independent daughters, until his plain, formidable 30-year-old eldest daughter defies him by proposing to his illiterate, genius master bootmaker employee and setting up a rival shop that puts her father out of business.
