The Goddess
Devi
Synopsis
In 1860 rural Bengal, an orthodox, aristocratic Hindu patriarch has a midnight religious revelation dreaming that his gentle 17-year-old daughter-in-law Dayamoyee is the living avatar of the Goddess Kali, worshipping her on a shrine and forcing the terrified girl into divine confinement until an apparent miraculous healing of a sick child cements village fanaticism, leading to catastrophic tragedy when a dying nephew is placed in her lap. Satyajit Ray and Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay's Cannes-competing masterpiece examining religious superstition starring Sharmila Tagore and Soumitra Chatterjee with Subrata Mitra's camera.
