Christ Stopped at Eboli
Cristo si è fermato a Eboli
Synopsis
In 1935, an anti-fascist painter, physician, and writer is sentenced by the Mussolini regime to internal political exile in the desolate, malaria-ridden village of Gagliano in Lucania, where the archaic peasants live in pre-Christian superstition and neglect, isolated beyond where 'Christ stopped at Eboli'. Francesco Rosi's BAFTA Best Foreign Language Film-winning humanist epic adapted from Carlo Levi starring Gian Maria Volonté, Irene Papas, and Lea Massari.
