Synopsis

In an Andhra Pradesh village, an educated, Westernized landlord's son arrives to manage his father's rural estate, seducing and impregnating the beautiful, low-caste Dalit housemaid Lakshmi whose deaf-mute husband has fled after a theft, until the husband returns seeking forgiveness and is brutally whipped by the landlord, inspiring an enraged peasant boy to throw a stone at the landlord's mansion.
